ICONIC IMAGES OF WOMEN
oil paintings by Anthony S. Maulucci of San Miguel de Allende
|
| | | | From the earth goddesses of the ancient world, to Egyptian
priestesses, to Aphrodite and the Madonna of Western art, to Dante’s
Beatrice and Hollywood’’s Marilyn Monroe, women have been depicted in
art as symbols of civilization’s highest ideals. As difficult as it is
to interpret the significance of these images, artists up to the
present continue to paint women in all their soulful beauty and
sensuous mystery.
Poet and painter A. S. Maulucci has made
women the focus of his portraiture for many years, and has been aware
that his work was undergoing a change since he moved to San Miguel de
Allende, Mexico in 2008. He began by painting with the inspiration of
Renaissance masters and the French Impressionists, but as he began to
depart from the model more and more he transformed his work from the
realistic to the more expressionistic and mystical. He accepts
commissions for portraits done in his individual style. |
